Beginner's Mindset

The term is translated from the original word, Shoshin, which is a word that comes from Zen Buddhism. It means you look at every situation you’re placed in as if it was your first time interacting with it. Yoga philosophy also promotes the beginner's mindset in its yamas of non-violence: ahimsa (here to self) and non-possession: aparigraha (here to the outcomes of one's efforts).

The initial attempts of adopting a beginner's mindset can feel uncomfortable, the outcomes from it can feel less than average and inglorious and because of this, maintaining consistency with a beginner's worldview can get discouraging. The frustration is real; it comes up from time to time for me, but I attempt to not sit with it. Mainly because wanting to know things and the drive to make huge leaps and progresses quickly, in anything that we choose to do, comes with being human. That said, it is important to remember that these very human factors can prevent us from approaching things as a beginner.

With some more reflection (done consciously for this post), I realize that with practice over time, the idea of starting from the start and keeping limited expectations on the outcomes is becoming a part of my overall attitude and mindset. I am realizing that the beginner's mindset is no longer a standalone tool that I use when it appears necessary, but it is now simply part of my approach towards challenges and new opportunities most of which are typically out of my comfort zone.

For me, a beginner's mindset

  • Supports curiosity over judgement

  • Limits preconceptions and expectations

  • Enables a multitude of possibilities

  • Promotes childlike joys of discoveries

  • Allows richer experiences and relationships

  • Provides space to grow

Now, where and how are you adopting a beginner's mindset?
